Overwatch 2 FPS Drops and Stuttering on Windows 11: How to Fix Them (2026)

Overwatch 2 FPS drops on Windows 11 are rarely caused by a single setting. The game can sit at 200 FPS in spawn, then hitch the moment a team fight starts, and the counter in the corner barely tells you why. That is annoying in Quick Play and costly in ranked. In this guide, I’ll go through how to tell stutter apart from low FPS and lag, the Windows 11 settings that cause it, the in-game settings that keep frame times steady, and what to do when drops only start after 20 minutes.

    Overwatch 2

Short answer: Update your GPU driver, run Overwatch in Fullscreen with a frame cap a little below your refresh rate, and turn on Reduce Buffering and NVIDIA Reflex if your card supports it. In Windows 11, keep Game Mode on, set the power mode to Best performance, and test Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling both on and off. If the drops only start after a while, check temperatures before you touch anything else.

    Low FPS, Stutter or Lag

These three feel the same in the middle of a fight, but they have different causes. Before changing anything, turn on Display Performance Stats in the game’s options and enable frame rate, GPU temperature, latency and packet loss. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+N in a match to bring up the network graph.

Play two or three matches and match what you see to this table:

What you seeLikely causeWhere to look
FPS counter is low all the timeGPU or CPU limit, settings too highIn-game settings
FPS looks high but the game hitchesFrame time spikes from buffering, overlays, scheduling or power settingsWindows 11 and in-game settings
Smooth for 15 to 20 minutes, then dropsHeat or memory pressureThermals and RAM
Enemies teleport, abilities fire late, FPS is fineLatency or packet lossYour connection, not your graphics
Started right after a Windows or driver updateChanged settings or a driver regressionDriver rollback, recheck Windows settings

If latency or packet loss spikes while your frame rate holds steady, no graphics setting will help. Fix the connection first.

One naming note: Blizzard dropped the “2” in February 2026, so the launcher and support pages now just say Overwatch. It is the same game on the same engine, and all the fixes below apply.

Start With the Checks Blizzard Recommends

Small frame rate issues can often be fixed with a few basic adjustments. Blizzard’s own support article on low frame rates in Overwatch lists a short set of steps: update drivers, reset video driver settings, reset in-game options, set power management to High Performance, close background apps and check for overheating. They look basic, but they fix more cases than the registry tweaks passed around on forums.

This matters most in a competitive game. A half-second hitch in a team fight is the difference between landing a Sleep Dart and eating a Rip-Tire, and a few of those per match add up over a season. Ranked players spend plenty of time and money on climbing, from coaching and VOD reviews to Overwatch 2 rank boosting, yet many players stuck in a rank are partly losing duels to frame pacing. It is worth ruling that out before you blame your aim.

Work through the checks in this order:

    1. Update the GPU driver. Use the NVIDIA app, AMD Software or Intel’s driver tool. If the stutter started right after a driver update, roll back to the previous version instead of waiting for the next one.
    2. Reset driver-level overrides. Old guides often tell you to force settings in NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Software. Global overrides for anti-aliasing, texture filtering or low latency mode can fight the game’s own settings, so restore the defaults.
    3. Reset the game’s settings. Close the game and rename the Overwatch folder in your Documents folder. The game builds a fresh config on the next launch, and you can rename the old one back if needed.
    4. Scan and repair the install. In the Battle.net app, click the gear icon next to Play and choose Scan and Repair. On Steam, use Verify integrity of game files.
    5. Close overlays and background apps. Discord’s overlay, browser tabs playing video, RGB and peripheral software, and recording tools all compete for CPU time. Blizzard’s support staff has previously listed Razer software as a known cause of FPS drops.

Windows 11 Settings That Cause Overwatch Stutter

If the basics did not help, the next suspects are Windows settings. Change one at a time and play a few matches after each, otherwise you will not know what fixed it.

    Game Mode and Background Recording

Open Settings > Gaming > Game Mode and make sure it is on. Game Mode gives the game priority and stops Windows Update from installing drivers or showing restart prompts mid-match.

Then open Settings > Gaming > Captures and turn off background recording if you do not use it. Recording the last few minutes of gameplay at all times costs GPU encoder time and disk writes.

    Power Mode

Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and pick Best performance. On a laptop, play plugged in, because battery mode lowers CPU and GPU clocks. One player on Blizzard’s forums traced new stuttering to a Windows update that had quietly switched the power plan back to Balanced, so check this even if you set it before.

    Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling

This setting lives under Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings. Microsoft’s DirectX team explains that it moves most GPU scheduling work off a high-priority CPU thread and onto a dedicated scheduler on the graphics card. Microsoft first shipped it as an opt-in feature, off by default.

Results vary from PC to PC. Some players get smoother frame pacing with it on, and others only lose their stutter when they turn it off. Test it both ways, restart after each change, and play three matches per setting. One thing to know before you disable it: NVIDIA’s DLSS Frame Generation needs it on, so if you use that in other games, you may prefer to leave it enabled.

On the same page, turn on Optimizations for windowed games if you play in Borderless Windowed, and turn on Variable refresh rate if your monitor supports G-SYNC or FreeSync.

    GPU Preference on Laptops

Laptops with integrated and dedicated graphics sometimes run the game on the wrong chip. In Settings > System > Display > Graphics, find Overwatch in the list (or browse to Overwatch.exe), then open Options and choose High performance.

Memory Integrity and Virtual Machine Platform

Microsoft’s support page on optimizing gaming performance in Windows 11 confirms that Memory Integrity and the Virtual Machine Platform can reduce game performance on some configurations. It also says players can turn them off while gaming and back on afterwards.

Memory Integrity is under Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation. The Virtual Machine Platform is in Turn Windows features on or off. Both protect your PC, and the Virtual Machine Platform is needed for WSL 2 and some emulators, so I would only test these after everything else has failed and switch them back on when you are done.

It is also worth rechecking all of the above after a feature update. Even a small enablement package like Windows 11 26H2 is a good moment to confirm that your power mode, Game Mode and GPU preference are still where you left them, especially if the stutter appeared the same week.

In-Game Settings That Keep Frame Times Steady

A high average frame rate with spikes feels worse than a slightly lower rate that never moves. The goal here is consistent frame times, not the biggest number on the counter.

These are the settings I would start with in the Video tab:

    SettingRecommendedWhy
Display ModeFullscreenLowest latency and fewest pacing issues
Frame RateCustom, capped a little below your refresh rateStops the frame rate swinging between extremes
VSync and Triple BufferingOffBoth add latency; use VRR instead
Reduce BufferingOnCuts the queue of pre-rendered frames
NVIDIA ReflexEnabled (or Enabled + Boost)Lowers latency and steadies pacing on NVIDIA cards
Render Scale100%, with Dynamic Render Scale offStops the resolution shifting mid-fight
Effects, Shadow and Local Fog DetailLow or MediumThese cost the most during team fights
Texture QualityHigh with 8 GB VRAM or moreLittle FPS cost unless VRAM runs out

The frame cap deserves a second look. If your PC can’t maintain your refresh rate during a five-ultimate team fight, cap it lower than that. A flat 144 FPS on a 240 Hz monitor feels smoother than a rate that bounces between 170 and 240.

Some players on Steam also report that switching from DirectX 12 back to DirectX 11 removed their drops. If your build offers a DirectX 12 option in the video settings, test both.

FPS That Drops After 20 Minutes: Heat, RAM and Long Sessions

If the first match runs smoothly but performance gets worse over time, check the GPU temperature first. Most cards sit somewhere between 65°C and 85°C under gaming load, and our guide on whether 70°C is hot for a GPU covers the normal ranges and the point where throttling starts. Clean dust from the fans and heatsinks, make sure case fans move air from the front toward the back, and keep laptops on a hard, flat surface or use a cooling pad.

The CPU matters more than many players think. Blizzard’s support team has noted that Overwatch uses up to six CPU cores, so on a six-core or smaller CPU, every background app competes directly with the game. That is why closing Chrome and Discord’s overlays often helps more on mid-range PCs than lowering graphics.

Then check the memory. Open Task Manager > Performance > Memory and look at the total, the speed and the slots used. Sixteen gigabytes is a comfortable amount for Windows 11 plus a voice app and a browser. If the speed reads far below what your RAM is rated for, enable XMP or EXPO in the BIOS. If only one slot is in use on a two-stick kit, the RAM is running in single channel, which hurts 1% lows.

If the frame rate gets steadily worse over an hour and only a game restart fixes it, the problem may be on the game side rather than your PC. Restart the game between long sessions and report it on Blizzard’s technical support forum with your DxDiag file attached (press Win+R, type dxdiag, then choose Save All Information).

    When Nothing Else Works

A few heavier options remain. If the problem started after a specific Windows update, go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates and remove it to test. If you suspect a corrupted driver installation, a full driver removal in Safe Mode followed by a fresh installation can clear out leftover profiles that a normal update leaves behind. And if Overwatch is installed on a hard drive, moving it to an SSD fixes the texture streaming hitches you notice when a match loads or a map changes area.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Overwatch 2 stutter when my FPS is high?

High average FPS with stutter means uneven frame times. The counter shows an average, but single slow frames are what you feel. Overlays, background apps, the power plan and buffering settings are the usual causes, and a frame cap your PC can always hold smooth most of it out.

Should Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling be on or off for Overwatch 2?

There is no single answer. Test it both ways for a few matches each, with a restart between changes. Keep whichever setting gives you steadier frame times on your hardware.

Does Reduce Buffering help with stuttering?

It mainly lowers input latency by cutting the queue of pre-rendered frames. On most PCs it also makes pacing feel tighter. If you turn it on and the frame rate becomes uneven, your CPU may be the limit, so try a lower frame cap with it.

What frame rate cap should I use in Overwatch 2?

Use a cap your PC can hold during the busiest team fights, not in spawn. With a VRR monitor, a few frames below the refresh rate work well. If your PC cannot reach the refresh rate in fights, pick a lower round number it can always hold.

Is Overwatch 2 now just called Overwatch?

Yes. Blizzard dropped the “2” in February 2026, alongside the start of a new season structure. The game, the engine and the PC settings are the same, so any Overwatch 2 performance guide still applies.

Does turning off Memory Integrity improve Overwatch performance?

On some PCs it can, and Microsoft says these features may affect gaming performance on certain configurations. It also lowers your PC’s protection against malicious drivers. Treat it as a last-resort test and turn it back on after playing.

Why did my FPS drop after a Windows 11 update?

Updates sometimes replace GPU drivers, reset the power plan or change graphics settings. Check your power mode, Game Mode and GPU preference first. If that does not help, roll back the GPU driver or uninstall the update to confirm it is the cause.

How much RAM does Overwatch 2 need on Windows 11?

Blizzard lists 6 GB as the minimum and 8 GB as recommended. In practice, 16 GB in dual channel gives Windows 11, Discord and a browser enough room. With 8 GB, close other apps before you play.

Can network lag look like FPS drops?

Yes. Rubber-banding and delayed abilities feel like stuttering, but your frame rate stays steady. Turn on the latency and packet loss stats or press Ctrl+Shift+N in a match, and if those numbers spike while FPS holds, fix the connection instead of the graphics.

    Conclusion

Most Overwatch stuttering on Windows 11 comes from a handful of things: an unstable frame rate, a power or scheduling setting that does not suit your hardware, background apps fighting for CPU time, or heat building up over a session. Work out which symptom you have first, then change one setting at a time. A steady frame cap, reduced buffering, the best performance power mode and a clean driver solve the problem for most players, and the heavier fixes are there for the PCs that need them.
